The African continent is on the precipice of unlocking its full potential of being a major world power and a leader on the global stage. With the African Continental Free Trade Area bringing us closer to African integration, and the continued efforts towards achieving the UN Sustainable Development Goals and those of Agenda 2063: The Africa We Want, the groundwork is already being laid with the media playing a very critical role.
In Partnership with
The Newsroom Innovation Youth Challenge is to figure out how we can get the youth of today to engage with the African cause through verified news produced by traditional/mainstream African Media.
We are looking for new and innovative ways to transform the Media Newsroom operations, processes and product formats and channels for maximum youth engagement.
In what ways can we make mainstream professional journalism and news media more appealing to them as a conduit to a greater engagement and participation in achieving the Africa we want?
We are looking for creative and disruptive ideas for digitally improving youth engagement with mainstream news media. ‘Digitally’ in this case refers to, finding unique and innovative ways of employing tools and strategies that use the internet, mobile platforms, computer-assisted reporting, digitally augmented reality, or other electronic means that would be impactful.
Strengthen existing media platforms, or harness new digital platforms for engaging the youth and transmitting news and other journalistic content to them.
Improve on or find new and innovative ways for news to reach the youth where they are in user friendly, relevant, perhaps interactive and appealing formats.
Amplify the relevance and usefulness of news by showing how it can benefit andimprove the lives of the youth.
Enhance the impact and ‘shelf life’ of news by extending its influence and intrinsic value for both the youth and content services.
Deepen media’s understanding of the youth media consumption patterns and behaviour by improving user analytics, audience profiling and market segmentation and any other technology and tools available.
Retain and grow the youth segment by keeping them interested once they have engaged. It is also important to create youth advocates who consistently recruit others to ride trending streams with them.
Our liberty depends on the freedom of the press, and that cannot be limited without being lost.
The competition is open to all people on the continent
Only individuals between the ages of 18 and 30 can participate
Contestants will have 3 weeks to answer the challenge
The submission format is a 3-minute YouTube video incorporating visuals, PowerPoint slides and anything else to enhance the video.
Contestants upload the video link to the Newsroom Youth Innovation Challenge website.
All received Newsroom innovation submissions will be evaluated by a panel of judges
The top 6 innovations will be sent to a panel of youth and a panel of media representatives for evaluation
From the youth panelists, the judges will then pick a winner and a first and second runner-up.
The top 3 will be flown to Nairobi, Kenya and awarded their prizes at the 2024 AllAfrica Media Leaders Summit on the 8th of May.
